Found at Birka, Sweden. This firesteel-shaped pendant symbolizes the god Freja, deity of fruitfullness (firesteel is a fashioned length of steel used to strike against flint to create sparks for making fire). Birka, on the island of Björkö in Sweden was the hub of the wealthy area around Lake Mälaren during the Viking era. Initially established as a trading post in the 8th century, Birka rose to become an important international port for visitors from near and far, and is now a World Heritage Site.
