Description
Germanic Iron Age (400-800 BC.).
Found in gilded silver in Uppland, Sweden. The figure symbolizes the female war spirit - the Valkyrie. Valkyries accompanied heroes into battle and wore often various guises - as powerful guardians and advisors on the battlefield, as beautiful maids offering their love to the warriors, and as escorts of dead heroes to Valhalla. The Valkyrie's hair is put up in a heavy knot in the back and wears an enormous necklace down over her robe.
